About
Established under the Faculty of Commerce, the Accountancy Department offers two undergraduate degrees, as described below.
What We Currently Offer
The Department offers a Bachelor of Accountancy (BAC) degree and a Bachelor of Commerce (Internal Audit) degree. In a sense, the two degrees are two sides of the same coin—the accountants account, and the auditors audit their work. The Accountancy degree was established first, in the 1990s, and it is designed to provide potential and future accountants and financial managers with the requisite knowledge to serve the Malawian economy by preparing students for successful careers in the fields of accounting and finance both in the private and public sectors.
Similarly, students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce (Internal Audit) degree, also known as BCOMIA are being trained to take on such professions as auditing and risk management in the private and public sectors. The degree is in response to the demands from both the private and public sectors for personnel with the requisite training in auditing, risk assessment and anti-fraud techniques.
Other Ventures
Besides carrying out research, the academic members of staff under the Department carry out consultancies. Generally, most of them are also associated with professional associations, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
