Dr G. Gamula

The current dean of the Faculty of Engineering is Eng. Dr. Gregory Gamula. He has been dean since December 2017, having previously been deputy dean since February 2016. Eng. Dr. Gamula also served two terms as head of the Electrical Engineering Department, in 2009 and from January 2014 to January 2016. From April 2007 to June 2009, he served as deputy head of department of the Electrical Engineering Department. As such, Eng. Dr. Gamula brings to the position of dean significant administrative and management experience. 

A graduate of the University of Malawi—The Polytechnic (1992), he went on to earn a master’s in renewable energy from the University of Oldenburg in Germany in 2000, and then a doctorate in environmental engineering specializing in energy and environment from China University of Geosciences in 2013. He has also attended numerous short training, both locally and internationally. Broadly speaking, his research interests are in electrical power and machines, energy, including renewable energy, energy management and optimization, and hybrid energy systems. Professionally, he is a registered engineer, a member of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (UK), the first vice president of the Malawi Institution of Engineers since 2017 (previously an honorary treasurer of the same) and once served as a board member on the Board of Engineers.

Before joining the Polytechnic, Eng. Dr. Gamula worked in the government as a building services engineer, eventually rising to the rank of acting chief building services engineer the Ministry of Works. He also served as regional buildings officer-south. Eng. Dr. Gamula is married with four children, two boys and two girls, and he enjoys watching movies and documentaries and reading novels. He is a committed Christian of the Malawi Assemblies of God.
