On 17th November 2017, The Centre for Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Appropriate Technology Development (WASHTED) in partnership with the Malawi Government and the Water Environmental Sanitation Network hosted a one-day knowledge exchange symposium for sanitation and hygiene promotion in Malawi under the theme “Where does our poo go”.

The symposium aimed to share current practices and experiences from a range of academics and practitioners who are working on the four-step journey which poo requires taking. This includes containment, transport, treatment, and Disposal/Reuse.

Participants of the Symposium benefitted from a number of presentations and exhibitions by academics and expert practitioners. Grover Cassila showcased some technologies of mobile toilets, Loowatt and Earth Auger, which could be implemented to help the issue of sanitation in the cities.

On the other hand, Mr. Samden Seunda a representative of the department of Sanitation at Blantyre City Assembly made a presentation on how the council is working towards renovating and constructing public conveniences in market places such Mbayani, Limbe and Zingwangwa.

A radio panel discussion was conducted later that afternoon on the successes and challenges of sanitation as a business in Malawi.
