The Polytechnic, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi, Faculty of Applied Sciences is inviting applications for the following Postgraduate Programmes which will commence in September, 2021.

1.DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)

2.MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN APPLIED SCIENCES (MPhil)

  1. MPhil Applied Sciences (Environmental Sanitation)
  2. MPhil Applied Sciences (Renewable Energy)

  4. MPhil Applied Sciences (Environmental Protection and Management)

 Candidates for PhD programmes MUST have a relevant Master’s or MPhil degree from recognized institutions. The PhD programme is for 3 years. 

 Candidates applying for MPhil must have an Honour’s degree in the First or Upper Second Division or a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Credit or a strong pass.   Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will be required to accumulate 60 credits of taught modules relevant to the selected MPhil research area. The MPhil programme is for 2.5 years duration.

 Fees and Expenses

  • US$10, 000 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of PhD will cater for supervision and examination costs with an indicative figure of US $ 4,500 for research for the whole PhD programme, and;
  • US$5,500 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of MPhil will cater for tuition, supervision, and examination costs with an indicative figure of US$3,500 for research for the whole MPhil programme for budgeting purposes.

 APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR PhD AND MPhil;

A completed PhD & MPhil application must include: 

  1. A non-refundable application fee of MK10,000 for Malawian applicants and US$25.00 for international applicants; 
  2. A completed Postgraduate Application form; 
  3. A certified academic transcripts of all previous university courses taken including percentage scores where necessary; 
  4. Certified copies of relevant certificates; 
  5. An abstract of a Master’s research or dissertation (for PhD applicants only); 
  6. A concept note relating to the proposed research topic which should not be more than 5 pages long. The concept note must include the following;
    • Introduction
    • Problem statement
    • Research objectives
    • Preliminary literature review
    • Methodology 
    • references
  7. Sample of academic writing i.e. publications, conference reports, etc which adhere to the broad conventions of academic publishing (i.e. contain an up-to-date review of relevant literature, a description of relevant research methods and an evaluation of results, etc.) and which identify the applicant as a significant contributor (maximum of 30 pages) (for PhD applicants only); 
  8. Two (2) reference letters (1 from an academic referee and 1 from professional referee);
  9. A detailed latest CV.

 3.MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH (MEH)

Admission requirements:

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with Credit or Distinction from any recognized institution of higher learning in Environmental Health, Public Health or any other related field with a distinction or credit. Candidates with a strong pass  of an average of 55%-59% and above must have at least two years’ work experience at graduate level and in a relevant field.

 

4.MASTER OF SCIENCE IN WATER RESOURCES AND SUPPLY MANAGEMENT (MWRSM)

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in Pure, Natural or Applied Sciences with Either a credit or distinction. Those with a strong pass of an average of 55% -59% must have at least 2 years relevant work experience. Those with social science background must have two years of relevant water related work experience. 

5.MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT (MEPM) 

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from any recognized institution of higher learning in Natural or Applied Sciences with Either a credit or distinction. Those with a strong pass of an average of 55% -59% must have at least 2 years of relevant work experience.

 

6.MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH (MOSH)

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to occupational safety and health such as Environmental Health, Environmental Sanitation, Environmental Engineering and Chemistry or relevant subject area, with Credit or Distinction. Candidates with a strong pass (average of 55-59%) degree in a relevant subject should have significant proven experience in the field, minimum of two years. Some candidates may be interviewed and/or their qualifications vetted with awarding bodies to ascertain their suitability for this programme.

Fees structure

Fees for the programme shall be Malawi Kwacha equivalent of US$6,500 for domiciled and SADC students payable in two installments. International students from countries outside the SADC region shall pay $7,500. Fees are subject to change from time to time. The fees cover tuition and dissertation supervision.  Research fees for students who want to conduct their research using College laboratory will depend on the type of research.

A complete master’s Programme application MUST INCLUDE: 

  1. A completed application form;
  2. A latest CV; 
  3. Two (2) reference letters (1 from an academic referee and 1 from a professional referee); 
  4. Certified/ fresh Academic Transcript(s); 
  5. Certified copies of original certificates by a commissioner of oath or Lawyers or the Central Office (University Office where the candidate graduated from); 
  6. A non-refundable application fee of MK10,000 for Malawian applicants and US$25.00 for international applicants;
